How To Clean Carpet Without Chemical?

Good maintenance of carpet will help to prolong carpet’s lifespan and improve indoor air quality in your indoor environment. De Hygienique gives you carpet maintenance practice tips without using chemical:

Daily Vacuuming of Carpet

Carpet trap high amount of dirt, dust and other harmful particles from the outdoor environment which can trigger allergy illnesses like asthma, rhinitis, eczema, etc. So it is extremely important to vacuum your carpet as frequent as possible to remove fine dirt particles embedded in the carpet and helps to lift up the flattened carpet pile.

When purchasing a vacuum cleaner to clean your carpet, always find a good quality system that has strong suction power, rotating brush, and efficient HEPA filter, so that dirt particles within the carpet can be lifted up to be sucked into the filter thoroughly and will not be blown out into the exhaust.

Remove shoes before stepping onto carpet

Ideally, remove footwear before stepping onto the carpet to prevent dirt and other outdoor harmful substances from getting into the carpet. If removal of footwear is not desired, then footwear should be wiped on large mat before entering carpeted premise.

Stain Removal

Always remove excess fluid spillage on carpet as soon as accident occurs by putting many pieces of kitchen paper on the spill to absorb as much fluid as possible. Do not rub as you will risk spreading the fluid and stain. If there are any sticky or dried substances on the carpet, scrape them gently using rubber spatula or spoon. Attending to your stain as soon as it occurs increases the chance of removing the stain completely, on the other hand, the longer you leave the stain on the carpet the higher the chance for the stain to stay permanently.

Dilute 1/2 cup of vinegar with a cup of warm water in a container. Sprinkle the vinegar solution lightly onto the stained carpet, do not over wet the carpet. Then use a clean cloth and start blotting from the edge of the stain towards the centre. Do not rub as this action will spread the stain and may damage carpet fibre. Repeat this step until stain is fully removed. Sprinkle baking soda over the cleaned carpet generously to absorb the fluid. Vacuum the carpet the next day to remove baking soda and lift up the flattened carpet pile after blotting.

Stain cleaning without using chemical or detergent works effectively depending on the type of stain and duration of stain in the carpet. If non-chemical way doesn’t work effectively, you may consider diluting a teaspoon of mild detergent like laundry or dishwashing detergent with 1 cup of warm water and blot the stain similar to the step suggested using vinegar solution.

Avoid using harsh chemical like bleach on carpet especially handmade rug as bleach may remove the colour.

The above suggested remedies are safer alternative to using unknown carpet cleaners sold in DIY stores which may contain harsh chemical, but these solutions are definitely not as effective as stain removal products used by professional carpet cleaners. Contrary to common misconception, not all professional carpet cleaners use harsh chemicals to clean carpet. De Hygienique, for example, cleans carpet using natural biodegradable product made of wood and maize together with minimal amount of chemical safe solution to dissolve and remove dirt in the carpet.
