Taking A Deep Breath
A charity public health talk held in conjunction with World Asthma Day delves into issues concerning the respiratory
Singapore, 4 May 2010 – Stop. Take a deep breath, inhale and exhale slowly. Often, we find ourselves stressed with work and/or family, neglecting to take care of our own health and inadvertently exposing ourselves to the harmful environment around us.
From shortness of breath, sinuses to asthma, these are medical issues that concern us, if not our young ones, who are especially vulnerable and susceptible to illnesses. In fact, the prevalence rate of children with asthma in Singapore is about 3 percent.
De Hygienique and Pacific Sleep Centre present a charity public health talk in conjunction with the World Asthma Day, which highlights asthma as an acute medical problem amongst other respiratory illnesses.
Breathe Easy
The public health talk, “Managing Allergies in Adults & Children”, is held in aid of Club Rainbow, a registered charity organisation committed to help children and youth suffering from chronic and life threatening illnesses. The organisers will be seeking donations on site for Club Rainbow.
The programme speakers are Dr Kenny Pang, ENT Consultant Director of Pacific Sleep Centre and Professor Hugo Van Bever, Head and Senior Consultant, Paediatric Allergy, Immunology & Rheumatology Services, National University Hospital, and John Chan, Corporate Business Manager of De Hygienique.
Dr Pang, who will be speaking on “Sinus Allergies Affecting Your Sleep”, said, “It is necessary to treat and control the symptoms of asthma as asthma can lead to difficulties in breathing, airway compromise and a poor quality of life. There has been a rising trend of asthma in children, especially during haze and in countries during pollen seasons.”
Similarly, Professor Van Bever will be speaking on “Allergic Diseases in Children: A Challenge for the Future”.
“Controlling the onsets of asthma can start from your bedroom,” said John Chan, who will be speaking on “The Relationship Between Allergies And Your Mattress”. Research shows that the mattress we spend a good eight hours a day on, is one of the dirtiest furniture in your home. It contains dust, mites and their faeces, dead skin flakes and bacteria – all deeply embedded. These harmful allergens can trigger allergy problems like eczema, sinusitis and asthma.
The charity talk seeks to address the respiratory issues facing children and suggest methods to better protect and ensure our children’s health. The talk will be held on Saturday, 8 May 2010 at 2.30pm at the Pacific Healthcare Specialist Centre, Paragon Level 19. Registration is free.
