What Lies Beneath

Hotel bedlinen is changed daily but what lies below the sheets are actually a host of accumulated dirt, dust, dead cells, and myriad of other allergens.

Singapore, 9 September 2009 – Did you know a Queen-size mattress in a typical hotel has about 300 people sleeping on it in a year*.

Put simply, you are sleeping on a bed which has potentially been shared with thousands of people since most hotels do not change their mattresses till they are at least seven years or older. So, the next time you check into a hotel room, don’t be misled by the crisp, white sheets on the bed. Just imagine what is actually lurking under the sheets, in the mattress.

Increasing awareness for hotel hygiene standards

Changing the bed linen daily is a standard protocol of the housekeeping department but changing the sheets does not mean you get to sleep on a clean, allergen-free surface. What is important is proper cleaning and maintenance of the mattress to get rid of the contaminants. “The provision of the highest level of hygiene and hazard-free sleeping environment should be a priority of every hotel in order to provide the best home-away-from-home experience,” said the spokesperson from a leading hotel chain in Singapore.

“Anti-bacterial and parasitical mattress treatment is required to ensure the highest level of hygiene and sleeping comfort via proactive anti-bed bugs and anti-dust mite treatments for our mattresses.”

Research shows that the mattress is one of the dirtiest furniture in your home. It contains dust, mites and their faeces, dead skin flakes and bacteria – all deeply embedded. These harmful allergens can trigger allergy problems like eczema, sinusitis and asthma.

The fundamental of a hotel’s service is the rental of mattresses. Unfortunately, the importance of mattress hygiene has been severely overlooked and definitely an area we would like to increase awareness and call to positive action from local hoteliers, especially with more international key events like Formula One being held in Singapore.

Dry-clean Your Mattress

Unlike conventional steam or chemical cleaning methods that might potentially damage the mattress or leave behind chemical residue, De Hygienique uses a 100 per cent dry treatment with the Potema® Mattress Cleaning System.

Invented and manufactured in Germany, this system is designed to provide a “deep cleanse” and sanitisation for mattresses, without the use of chemical or steam. It is awarded with ECARF (European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation) Quality Seal in 2006 and proven to “effectively improve allergic symptoms” by the ECARF experts. The ECARF is a certified quality standard to help allergic patients to choose suitable goods and services.
