Shag rug has made a comeback. Shag rug is thick, plushy, and gives a cosy feel to the under feet when you walk on it. Its wide varieties of contemporary designs, texture, and colours help to create different elements of ambience, look and personality into a room.
While shag rug makes an appealing and comfortable piece of interior décor, conscientious and regular maintenance need to be observed to upkeep its look and quality. Just like other carpet and rugs, shag rug inhibits a lot of dirt and micro organisms. But because the contemporary rugs are typically made with long pile and sometimes denser material, this carpet type is more difficult to clean and maintain than other carpet or rugs.
Below are recommended steps to maintain your shag rug:
Vacuum regularly with correct type of vacuum cleaner
Similarly to maintaining other carpet, your shag rug need to be vacuumed at least twice a week, depend on the traffic condition.
Shag rug shouldn’t be vacuumed with a beater brush as the motorised beater may loosen the yarn twists and damage the carpet fibre. Always vacuum your shag rug using the “suction only” function to prevent unnecessary damage to the rug.
For very thick pile carpet, you may consider using a grooming rake to brush the carpet every fortnightly to maintain the beauty and softness of your rug.
Remove stains immediately
The most important rule when maintaining any fabric furnishing is to remove any stains immediately. Stains left unattended over time will cause the stain to become a permanent mark on the rug.
Always remove any remaining residue on the rug before blotting the stain. Use a clean damp cloth to blot the stain. If necessary, mild detergent like laundry detergent can be applied on the stain. Use a soft bristled brush to brush the suds into the stains, or blot the stains with the suds made from laundry detergent.
Rinse the cleaned spot using another piece of clean damp cloth to remove the detergent residue from the rug. Refrain from overly wet the rug to prevent forming of water mark on the rug as water mark is very difficult to be removed.
Dry the damp spot immediately by using hair dryer or sun the rug after stain is cleaned.
Keeping rug smelling fresh without using chemical
Once a month, sprinkle baking soda evenly over the entire rug. Let the baking soda sit in the rug for about 30 minutes and then vacuum the rug thoroughly. The baking soda helps to keep the rug dry and smelling fresh.
Engage professional carpet cleaning service
Depending on traffic condition, your shag rug should be professionally cleaned at least once a year to thoroughly remove the embedded dirt particles, stains and micro organisms in the rug. While DIY stain removal and weekly vacuuming helps to maintain the rug, these are not sufficient to thoroughly clean the rug, which is necessary if you want to prolong the look and quality of the rug. Professional carpet cleaning service has the necessary tools, technical skill and products to effectively clean the carpet inside-out.
Although shag rug is more difficult to maintain than other types of rugs, with diligent commitment and effort, your shag rug can still be maintained effectively. Similarly to other carpet types, regularly cleaned and maintained shag rug will have longer lifespan. Stains on regularly cleaned carpet can also be removed more easily as old stains tend to be more stubborn and difficult to be removed even by professional carpet cleaners.
