How can I make my upholstery smell nicer?

Nobody wants to sit on furniture that smells bad. A smelly sofa is not only unpleasant to sit on, but it can also be a health hazard.

If your upholstery is starting to smell bad, here are some possible ways you can fix the problem.

Vacuum regularly

One of the best ways to keep your upholstery smelling fresh is to vacuum it regularly. This will remove any decomposing dirt, food crumbs, dead skins or dust that may be trapped in the fabric.

Deodorise Upholstery

Looking for a quick way to make your sofa smell nice and fresh? Try deodorising it! There are a few different ways to go about deodorising your sofa. The first method is to use baking soda. Simply sprinkle some baking soda over the fabric of the sofa, then wait for it to work its magic. The baking soda will help absorb any bad smells, leaving your sofa smelling fresher in no time!

Another option is to make your own deodorising solution, mix one-part white vinegar with two parts water. Then, using a spray bottle, spritz the solution onto the sofa and let it dry. The acidic vinegar may help neutralise bad odour that is caused by organic waste.

Use fabric freshener

If you like your fabric upholstery to smell fresh like ocean breeze or relaxing like lavender, you can apply a fabric freshener that comes with added fragrance. You may even consider adding some drops of essential oil in a spray bottle of water and applying the essential oil solution onto your upholstery. Remember to test the spray on a small, inconspicuous area first to make sure it doesn’t damage the fabric before applying the freshener to the entire upholstery

Should you smell a very bad musty odour emitting from your upholstery, you may consider professionally assessing the upholstery set, and treated if necessary. This is a more expensive option, but the professionals have technical knowledge and equipment to treat the source of the odour.

Bad odour on fabric upholstery may be caused by the accumulation of body perspiration, pets’ urine, or even mould and other pest infestation. Severe odour is usually more difficult to remove thus seeking professional help will be more efficient and effective.
