How Do You Tell If Your Furniture Is Dirty?

Most of us invest significant time and effort each week in keeping our home clean. We vacuum carpets, wipe down hard surfaces, and scrub our bathrooms in an attempt to make our homes as healthy and safe as possible. If we see no spots, stains, visible dust, debris, or fungus, we are likely to come to the conclusion that it is spotless and clean.

While our attention is usually on these more obvious areas of our homes, we often forget about the areas that are less obvious. Some examples of such areas are the sofa, mattress, carpet, dining chairs, and curtains. We use them every day and spend a considerable amount of time using this furniture, but chances are we may only clean them once a year or less.

Dust

We spend hours on sofas with our family catching our favorite shows on TV, but did you know there is as much dust on the sofa as on the surface of a shelf? Just give a pat to the sofa cushion under a bright light and you’d likely see a large cloud of dust fly into the air. Dust particles are trapped deep in the sofa and are not easily visible. Vacuuming regularly will help with ridding the surface dust and debris but will not be able to get to dust trapped deep inside.

Dust mites

We spend 6 to 8 hours in our bed, getting much-needed rest. We shed dead skin while we sleep and this accumulation of dead skin cells in our mattress promotes the growth of dust mites. Dust mites are microscopic arachnids that feast and thrive on our dead skin cells. Studies show that there are 100,000 to 10 million of these creatures in our mattresses. These dust mites and their droppings can cause serious respiratory allergic reactions.

Fungus, mold and bacteria

Perspiration! In hot humid Singapore, it’s a given to perspire. An average adult sweats 10 to 14 litres a day. Much of this is on our clothes and inevitably transferred onto the furniture that we use. The moisture from our sweat makes for an excellent breeding ground for fungus, mould and bacteria deep within our upholstery and mattresses. If not taken care of, these can cause serious health problems.
