Our beds have provided us with much love and care for numerous restless nights. However, it may be wise to start thinking twice before jumping into bed and snuggling into the blankets tonight.

We’re referring to none other than the dirty mattresses that have most definitely accumulated millions of dust mites, dust, dirt particles and countless dead skin cells.

The importance of a clean mattress may be further emphasised when you find out that we spend one-third of our lives sleeping in bed!

So How Often Should I Clean My Mattress?

As there haven’t been sufficient studies conducted on the topic to provide an accurate recommendation, numbers provided by experts from all around the globe have been inconsistent, and our thoughts? Give your mattress as often the treatment it needs to give you a peace of mind.

If you’re not sure, experts from renowned mattress companies have advised us to give them a thorough professional cleaning at least twice a year — and for those who suffer from allergies, it might be wise to take it up a notch.

But let’s also not forget the basics — our bed sheet. It is best for our beds to change into fresh new sheets every week or two.

Although regular wash in the laundry machine may do the work, germs, dirt and allergens are much more effectively cleaned and eliminated by washing them in warm or hot water. As dust mites are best tackled by heat, De Hygienique recommends an optimum temperature of at least 60°C!

On a final note, here’s an advice to prolong your mattress’s lifespan: Flip and rotate it every 3 months to prevent sagging and indentations!

Two Ways to Clean

1. Vacuuming the Bed

Most of us don’t own any professional equipment to give our mattresses a thorough clean, which leads us to our next viable option for ridding our mattress from any dust mites, allergens and other pesky bacteria, the vacuum cleaner.

Don’t be swayed by the idea of using baking soda for your beds. By adding sprinkles of baking soda on our mattresses, you are eliminating odours and drawing out the dirt and moisture underneath the layers of spring or cushions. Let the process take about an hour or two before you give your bed a good vacuum to let the magic happen.

2. Contact the Professionals
