While we spend so much time in our beds, few of us take the time to clean our mattresses regularly – perhaps because it seems like such a daunting task. However, it’s not as difficult as it seems. Mattress cleaning can be fairly easy to do.
Contrary to many misconceptions that cleaning a mattress is expensive and heavy duty, you don’t have to use expensive cleaning products or harmful chemicals to freshen up your mattress.

Why use baking soda on mattresses?
Most modern cleaners on the market today contain chemicals that are harmful to people, so why use something so harmful to the body when baking soda would suffice? It’s consumable and won’t harm anyone while it cleans your mattress!
As a natural deodorizer, baking soda is perfect for cleaning mattresses. Besides being relatively mild, you can use it safely on fabric without causing damage.
Baking soda is inexpensive, non-toxic, and has absorbing properties that make it easy for it to absorb moisture and odors.
How to clean a mattress with baking soda?
Gather Your Supplies
What you’ll need:
- Spray bottle
- Baking soda
- Clean rags
- Laundry powder detergent
- Vacuum machine
Once you’ve collected your materials, you can get started cleaning your mattresses.
Remove your mattress from all bedding and pillows so that your mattress is completely bare. Since you’re cleaning your mattress, use this time to wash your sheets as well.
Step 1: Deodorize Your Mattress
Adding an initial layer of baking soda can help neutralise odour before moving on to cleaning your mattress. To deodorize your mattress, grab that all-too-handy baking soda and sprinkle a generous amount over your mattress.
Rub the baking soda in gently to help it bond with your mattress. You’ll want to leave the baking soda on for several hours or overnight to give it time to eliminate the odors.
Step 2: Vacuum the Mattress

Vacuuming your mattress won’t remove any stains, but it will extract dust and dirt particles. It can also remove leftover baking soda from the mattress.
Step 3: Spot-clean your mattress with a stain remover

Sometimes, no matter how careful you are, accidents happen and stains end up on your mattress. When this happens, it’s important to blot the stain quickly and effectively. If you wish to attempt clean the stain, you may gently rub a small amount of laundry powder detergent on the spilled stain till the stain lighten or removed.
Use a clean damp cloth to blot the laundry residue from the mattress upholstery. It’s important to take note not to apply too much moisture when cleaning stain on mattress. If in doubt, engage professional mattress cleaner for a thorough mattress stain removal treatment.
Step 4: Sprinkle Baking Soda (Again)
After stain removal, you’ll want to “rinse and repeat”. To make sure your mattress is refreshed and dry, sprinkle another layer of baking soda over your entire mattress and leave for a couple of hours. The longer you can leave it on, the better.
Step 5: Vacuum (Again)
It’s time to vacuum a second time. Once the baking soda has done its job, thoroughly vacuum up the excess. Since this is the final vacuum, take care to clean the seams and edges since allergens can collect there.
Step 6: Air Out Your Mattress
Now that your mattress is freshened up, you’ll want to give it some time to sit. Ideally, you should let the mattress dry for about 6-10 hours, depending on how much moisture was applied on the mattress when removing stain.
If space and weather permit, try airing your mattress out in the sun. Sunlight has naturally bacteria-destroying properties, meaning those rays may help eliminate remaining bacteria.
Now that you’ve cleaned one side, it’s time to do the other. Flip your mattress and repeat steps 1-6 and you’ll have a perfectly clean mattress.
